THE LAW CHANGED FOR TRAILERS IN DECEMBER 2021
If you have a full car licence, you can now tow a trailer up to 3,500kg legally. The government highly recommend a competency course for all drivers, this course cover reversing and manoeuvring, uncoupling and recoupling the trailer and driving on both urban and rural roads. You will be issued a certificate of Competency on successful completion of the course.
PASSED YOUR CAR TEST BEFORE JAN 1997?
Drivers that passed their category B (car) test before 1st January 1997 you are legally entitled to drive a vehicle with a heavy trailer up to a maximum of 8.25 tonne MAM, (Maximum Authorised Mass).
If you would like to tow a vehicle combination heavier than this, you will need to upgrade to the Category C1E (7.5 tonne and trailer) or the Category CE (articulated HGV) driving licence entitlements.
PASSED YOUR CAR TEST AFTER JAN 1997?
Drivers that passed their category B (car) test after 1st January 1997 are legally entitled to drive
- a vehicle up to 3.5 tonne MAM with a trailer up to 750kg MAM
- or a trailer over 750kg MAM so long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3.5 tonne
For anything heavier than this you will need to sit the category BE (car and trailer) driving test.

CATEGORY BE (CAR & TRAILER) TRAINING

To qualify for this course you must hold a category B (car) licence. This course will qualify you to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonne MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) with up to 8 passenger seats, with a trailer weighing more than 750kg.

New to caravanning or moving to a larger caravan, unsure on the rules governing caravanning, did you pass your driving test before January 1997 and gain your trailer licence and never had any professional trailer training before, would you like to feel more confident when towing your trailer? HOURSEBOX TRAINING COURSE
Your course will be tailored to your needs.
New to driving a horsebox, unsure of the rules governing trailers, did you pass your driving test before January 1997 and gain your trailer licence and never had any professional trailer training before, would you like to feel more confident when towing your trailer, would you like to understand how to drive compassionately when your horses are loaded?
