Passed Your Test After January 1997?

Drivers that passed after 1^st January 1997 are legally entitled to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonne MAM with a trailer up to 750kg MAM. Alternatively, you can drive a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3.5 tonne. For anything heavier than this, you will need the category BE (car and trailer training in Southampton).

Passed Your Test Before January 1997?

Did you pass your category B (car) test before 1^st January 1997? If so, you are legally entitled to drive a vehicle with a heavy trailer up to a maximum of 8.25 tonne MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass). To tow any vehicle combination heavier than this, you will need to upgrade to the Category C1E (7.5 tonne and trailer) or Category CE (articulated HGV).

Category BE (Car And Trailer) Training

To qualify for this course you must hold a category B (car) license. After passing their trailer training, Southampton drivers will be qualified to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonne with up to 8 passenger seats and a trailer weighing more than 750kg.
